I am using two RAMPS boards, 1.4 and 1.6. I discovered that the V1Engineering dual endstop (and also default Marlin code) use pin 4 to PWM control the spindle speed. On my RAMPS boards that is the SECOND set of servo pins from the Reset button. But I also discovered that alone was not enough.

The RAMPS 1.4 comes with 6 end stop connections (X Min, X Max, Y Min, Y Max, Z Min, Z Max). Rarely do you use all six. What you're really interested in is either the Max or Min. If you know one, you can limit movement based on it's location (0) via the software (if I can detect Min and know my bed is only 200mm wide then I can tell the software.

When looking at the Ramps 1.4 board with the power-plugs facing left, the endstop-pins are located in the upper right corner as shown in the image. From left to right we have X-min, X-max, Y-min, Y-max, Z-min, Z-max. The top most pins are Signal pins, the middle pins are ground and the lower pins are 5v/Vcc.

Re: ramps 1.4 and external stepper driver. STEP and DIR are direct connections to output pins on the CPU. Your diagram indicates they're all opto-isolated, so I think you can probably connect them as you guessed with signal and ground.it will act like the PNP controller type in the diagram.
